The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) welcomes you to our international network of people of Indian origin (PIO).GOPIO is a non partisan, secular global organization engaged in promoting the well being of People of Indian Origin (PIO), enhancing cooperation and communication between Indians living in different countries.

There are over 24 million people of Indian origin (PIO) living outside India. Most of the PIOs have become highly successful in business and profession. When their professional expertise and financial resources are to be pooled together, it will benefit not only people of Indian origin but also their country of residence and India.
GOPIO was founded at the First Global Convention of People of Indian Origin in New York in 1989. The initial thrust of GOPIO was fighting human rights violation of people of Indian origin. Although this has been improved in the last one decade, human rights violations continue to be a major issue for PIOs living outside India. GOPIO has now set its priorities in pooling our resources, both financial and professional, for the benefit of PIOs, the countries they come from and India. Toward this goal we welcome you to join in this international effort.
The VII GOPIO International Convention now convened in Mauritius on the 5th to 7th December notes that:
Keeping in view that Mauritius
  • Has a living and vibrant democracy, a multicultural and multilingual civil society.
  • Is strategically situated in that part of the world having a high concentration of PIO population;
  • Has always played a lead role in international forums on matters relating to PIO’s interest Worldwide;
and that there is a need for the PIO Diaspora to have a country which can be their center for local activities;

Mauritius emerged as the natural choice for being the Capital of the PIO Diaspora.

Further that, at the Conference held in New Delhi on 12 January 2003, GOPIO enthusiastically welcomed a proposal that Mauritius be designated the CAPITAL of the PIO Diaspora and

That subsequently, the proposal that MAURITIUS be designated as the CAPITAL of the PIO Diaspora has received the approval of the GOPIO Country Chapters globally.

Therefore, in conformity with the decisions of the GOPIO Country Chapters, the REPUBLIC OF MAURITIUS, on the fifth day of December 2003, is hereby designated and proclaimed the CAPITAL of the PIO Diaspora.
